Go to the movies and you’re lucky to find anyone in the house. Something bad is happening at multiplex and we need to act now.

The photo above is something moviegoers see all too often. A theater with only a scattering of an audience. Unless the main attraction is a comic-book epic or a reboot of something that was already successful, such as “Mission Impossible” or “Jurassic World,” ticket buyers find it too easy to find a seat. A Labor Day headline in Variety captured the feeling in an nutshell: “The May to Labor Day season initially soared, but global grosses took a nosedive as foreign movie ticket sales plunged further and a glut of male-skewing tentpoles battled for scraps in the U.S.”
